What to Expect on the Sea Trips Gozo & Comino Cruise

Comino has no bridge and no road, so the Blue Lagoon can only be reached by boat. The public ferry from Ċirkewwa is a crossing and no more than that. A day cruise adds the coastline, the caves and, on the full-day versions, a few hours on Gozo as well. The Sea Trips Gozo, Comino and Blue Lagoon tour has more than 21,000 reviews and starts at $28 per person.

Departure times move through the year, and the same listing covers both the Gozo shuttle option and the beach option. The calendar below shows what runs on your dates and the current price.

It is a large catamaran that leaves Bugibba Jetty and runs for a listed seven hours. It moors in the Blue Lagoon so you can swim straight from the boat or step ashore onto Comino, spends the middle of the day on Gozo, and cruises back through Crystal Lagoon and the Santa Maria caves. There are waterslides off the side, swim ladders, freshwater showers and a bar.

For the price, that covers a lot: Comino, Gozo, swimming time and a coastal cruise past St Paul's Island and the sea caves. Value for money scores 4.4/5 on the listing, and plenty of recent reviews describe it as a good day out for what it costs.

What the headline does not make obvious is how the seven hours are divided. The itinerary gives the Blue Lagoon about an hour and Gozo three to four. If you booked this because the Blue Lagoon is the thing you came to Malta for, that is a shorter stop than the name of the tour suggests.

For this review we checked the current listing and recent traveller reports, looking in particular at the lower-rated ones, which is where boarding, deck space and the Gozo transfer are described. There are five things worth knowing before you book:

  • The boat is large and seats are not allocated, so where you sit depends on when you board.
  • The Blue Lagoon stop is about an hour. Gozo gets three to four.
  • Land transport on Gozo is a paid extra, and the drop-off is a walk from the centre of Victoria.
  • The boat cruises through Crystal Lagoon and past the Santa Maria caves without stopping.
  • Stepping ashore at the Blue Lagoon needs the free Comino access pass.

The itinerary and booking notes cover most of this. The access pass is the exception, and without it you cannot go ashore at the Blue Lagoon.

The main advantage is that you see both Comino and Gozo in one day for a low price. If the Blue Lagoon itself is what you came for, a Comino-only cruise gives you longer there for less money.

Five Things Worth Checking Before You Book

  1. Sort out the free Comino access pass before you travel to the jetty.

Since 1 May 2025 you need a free QR pass from blcomino.com to set foot on land at the Blue Lagoon, and it is separate from your tour booking. Plenty of people find out about it at the harbour and have to apply for it there before they are allowed to board, which can delay check-in. If you plan to stay on the boat and swim from it, you do not need one.

  2. Get to Bugibba Jetty well before the time on your booking.

The joining instructions ask you to arrive half an hour before departure. In practice boarding starts earlier, and the top deck fills within the first ten or fifteen minutes of it opening.

  3. Decide about the Gozo transport when you book, not at the port.

The shuttle to Victoria or to Ramla Bay is an option you select at checkout. It is not part of the fare. Without it you remain at Mġarr harbour for the Gozo stop, where there is far less to do than at either of those.

  4. Check your email on the morning of the trip for your Blue Lagoon time slot.

The slot is not in your booking confirmation, and the operator says email is its main way of contacting you. Miss that message and you arrive without knowing when you are due on the water.

  5. Plan to carry everything with you all day.

There is nowhere secure to leave bags, and the boat and the shuttle both go on to other passengers while you are ashore. You will be walking around Victoria with your beach kit.

How the Seven Hours Are Divided

What the itinerary allows for each part of the day.

The listing gives the total as seven hours from Bugibba Jetty. It also says the order can change: some departures visit the Blue Lagoon first and then Gozo, others the reverse. You find out on the day.

The outward leg runs along Malta's northern coast past St Paul's Island. At the Blue Lagoon the boat moors and you get about an hour, which is the figure in the itinerary. Recent reports put it between roughly 45 minutes and an hour and a half, with some of that spent getting several hundred people off the boat and back on again. You can swim from the boat or, with the pass, go ashore.

Gozo is the long stop, at three to four hours. If you have bought the shuttle it takes you to Victoria for the Citadel and the old streets, or from June to September to Ramla Bay. Once the shuttle transfers are included, you have closer to three hours in Victoria or at Ramla Bay, and some people find that longer than they want.

The return cruises through Crystal Lagoon and past the Santa Maria caves and the Elephant's Head. The boat slows down and keeps going. The listing states that plainly, and it still surprises people.

Part of the dayTimeWhat happens
Blue LagoonAbout 1 hourThe boat moors in the lagoon. Swim from it, or go ashore with the access pass.
Gozo3–4 hoursFree time. Victoria or Ramla Bay with the paid shuttle, Mġarr harbour without it.
Crystal Lagoon & Santa Maria cavesOn the return legCruised through for photographs. No swim stop.
Cruising between stopsThe balance of the 7 hoursThe northern coast, St Paul's Island and the Elephant's Head.

Added up, that is roughly four to five hours at the stops out of a listed seven, with the rest of the day spent cruising between them.

Stop 1: Boarding at Bugibba Jetty

Boarding and seat choice are the main practical issues mentioned in recent reviews.

The upper deck has a limited number of padded loungers, all first come, first served. The booking notes mention this, but the photographs can make the deck look more spacious than it feels on a busy sailing. Arrive at 08:45 for a 10:00 departure and the top deck can already be full by 09:10. Once it fills, many passengers end up on the covered lower deck, and one traveller put it at around half of them. Families who arrive early still end up split across different parts of the boat.

The same seat scramble can happen again when everyone reboards at Mġarr, and the wait there can run to half an hour or more with no shade and no clear instruction about where to stand.

Arriving early does not guarantee a seat outside, but it makes a noticeable difference. If shade matters more to you than a view, the lower deck is covered and far less contested.

Stop 2: The Blue Lagoon

Even reviewers who disliked other parts of the tour usually rate the Blue Lagoon stop positively. The water is shallow and clear over a white sand bottom, the boat moors in the water itself, and the slides off the side come up repeatedly in positive reviews.

Two things shape the hour: the access pass and the crowds. Without the pass you can swim from the boat but not land on Comino. How busy the lagoon is ashore is not the operator's doing. Malta caps the number of people ashore at 4,000 at any one time across three daily slots, and summer slots can still feel very crowded even with the cap. People who go ashore in summer often struggle to find space to sit and end up back in the water.

Two recent travellers also said the crew kept swimmers close to the boat and used a whistle to call people back. That is two accounts and not a pattern, although it is worth knowing if you had pictured swimming across the channel. Our Blue Lagoon visitor guide covers the pass and the shore in more detail.

Stop 3: Gozo

Three to four hours is the longest stop of the day, and how it goes depends almost entirely on the transport decision you made at checkout.

With the shuttle you get Victoria: the Citadel on its hill, the cathedral, the narrow streets and the views from the walls. Reviews of Victoria itself are positive. The main complaint is where the shuttle drops you: a car park or a school ten to fifteen minutes' walk from the centre, uphill. Two travellers with limited mobility said that made the stop hard work. The buses themselves are described as dated, with air conditioning that struggles in summer.

Without the shuttle you are at Mġarr harbour for the duration. There is a waterfront there, but three hours can feel long if you have not planned anything else.

The Ramla Bay alternative runs from June to September and depends on the weather. One traveller chose the beach on a windy day and spent three hours in a café because the water was not swimmable.

There is no guide on Gozo. The crew give you a return time and the rest is yours. For what actually fits into a stop that length, see our Malta and Gozo guide.

Stop 4: Crystal Lagoon and the Santa Maria Caves

Crystal Lagoon is deeper, narrower and cliff-ringed, and a good many travellers rate it above the Blue Lagoon for looks. The boat cruises slowly through it and past the Santa Maria caves and the Elephant's Head so you can photograph them.

The itinerary is clear that this is a scenic pass with no swim stop, and it is still recorded as a disappointment, usually described as a drive-by. If swimming in Crystal Lagoon is something you want, that is a different tour, and our Blue Lagoon vs Crystal Lagoon comparison sets out which cruises stop where.

Other Blue Lagoon and Gozo Day Cruises

Comino-only cruises, smaller boats and private charters on the same route.

If you want a smaller boat or more time at the Blue Lagoon, the live options below cover Comino-only cruises from Bugibba, Mellieħa and Sliema, smaller-boat trips to the Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon, and private charters around Comino and Gozo.

Other Practical Things to Know

Points that are easy to miss on the listing.

  • Announcements can be hard to hear. The guide category is the lowest-scoring on the listing at 4.3/5, and several reviewers say they struggled to follow the commentary from parts of the boat.
  • Outside food and drink are not allowed on board. There is a kitchen and a bar, and reports on the prices go both ways: some reviewers call them reasonable, others expensive.
  • The underwater viewing windows and the slides are not always in use. The booking notes say visibility through the windows depends on conditions, and that from September to May a large sailing catamaran may be used instead, with no windows at all. A few reviewers describe the windows closed or no slide put out.
  • Weather can change or cancel the day. The captain may modify or cancel the trip, and the operator says it will email you with another date or a full refund if it cancels. A few travellers described very uncomfortable crossings on rough days.
  • The route and the start point can change. The booking notes allow for it, and the meeting point varies with the option you book, so check your own confirmation and not a friend's.

Is the Sea Trips Gozo & Comino Tour Worth It?

Yes, for the right kind of day. At $28 per person it covers a lot for the price: seven hours, two islands, several hours of swimming and a stretch of coastline you cannot otherwise see. A rating of 4.4/5 from more than 21,000 reviews is a fair reflection of it. Most of the criticism is about logistics. The islands themselves get consistently good reports.

This tour is a good fit if you want to see both Comino and Gozo in one day without hiring a car or working out ferry times, and you are comfortable with a big boat and several hundred fellow passengers.

A Comino-only cruise may suit you better if the Blue Lagoon is the main thing you want. That one carries up to 34 passengers, runs four hours, costs from $25 per person and is rated 4.9 from more than 1,400 reviews. Its reviews mention onboard crowding much less often, and it swims from the boat, so the land pass does not apply.

A private boat may suit you better if you are travelling as a group and the seating is what puts you off. It covers the Blue Lagoon, Comino and the sea caves with swim stops, runs two to four hours instead of a full day, and costs from $193 for the boat with up to seven people. That works out at about $28 each with seven aboard, the same as one seat on the catamaran, and about $48 each with four. It is rated 5.0 from more than 150 reviews.

If you do book the Sea Trips cruise, sort out the Comino pass at home and choose your Gozo transport at checkout. Then get to the jetty early enough to pick where you sit.
